Yesterday was dark and rainy--really dark--as the remnants of hurricane Florence moved up the coast. I was glad for the rain, because now I don't have to water my plants for at least a few days.

I drank lots of tea and finished reading The Forbidden Place by Susanne Jansson--so good! A spooky novel that is far more than just a story. So much to think about and record in my notebook.

Do you make these "Apple Babies" on autumn days? Peel and cut two apples into eighths. Cut crescent dough triangles (the refrigerator rolls) into two long triangles each and roll each triangle around an apple slice. Place in pan and drizzle half a stick of butter over all. Generously sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Pour a 1/4 cup of apple cider or orange juice in spaces around pan (not over the top of the apples/dough). Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes. They are too easy and addicting.

September is the month for rose bouquets at my house. My rose bushes always go crazy in September--wild and huge and producing continuous blooms. I cut at least a dozen stems a week.

The September sky can be darkly moody or so blue and bright that it leaves me breathless. I love the sky so much.

The days are growing shorter, the nights cooler. The in-drawing-cozy-time has come.

I have taken out this cardigan project I started last spring. I am only knitting on it a little each evening, but maybe I will finish it this fall. The color of the wool doesn't photograph well. It is a true moss green.

These two never stop making me smile.

Zach stringing-up. Always there is music at my house ♪

I have said before that I think Presley is really a prince in a dog suit. Look at those eyes. So much love and kindness for everyone. Except for when the skunk sprayed him in the face a few weeks ago. He was all dog then.

I can't remember the last time I watched television. I watch the birds and animals instead.

 Look closely now:

And look who is watching from the fence!

Leaf fall has begun. The leaves are just beginning to lose their chlorophyll.

The pond is splendid with purple loosestrife, orange jewel weed, goldenrod, misty mauve love grass, and wild aster.

It has taken me awhile to get going, but we have finally started back to our home school lessons this week. I think it is the latest we have ever started. But, better late than never, right?

Love and roses,
Sue

  1. What a pretty view out your window! And the pond, with those beautiful purple flowers! Your roses!! (okay - enough exclamation marks) :D Good luck this year with your homeschooling. :) I am wanting to knit a poncho, so I think I'd better get going.

    1. Thank you for the good luck wishes with our homeschooling this year. I think I might need it. My life has been so unpredictable for the last few years that I feel like I am holding my breath. It's hard to relax and believe that all will be well.

    1. Karen, it took a lot of time with Presley. For the first three or four months the kittens could not be in the same room as Presley. We actually crated the dogs for a few hours each day so the kittens could come downstairs into our living space and hang out. We introduced them very slowly to the dogs (especially Presley). We kept Presley on his leash every time the cats came down to play. It took about a month before we could trust him off leash around them, and I *never* thought they would be friends. Now Elvis doesn't like the cats as much as Presely! Elvis tolerates the cats, but that is all. He was very close with our old black cat Indie. Poor Elvis really misses him, and these cats just aren't the same.

  3. ooooh, roses in september! roses are at their best where i live in late may. it just gets too hot and humid for them in midsummer. we'll see a very sparse second flush of bloom around this time, but only one or two per bush, and they are strangely...disheveled looking? and they last barely a day on the bush.

good shot of the hawk! they always look so cross, somehow. makes me giggle a bit. other smaller birds (and chickens, of course) find them less amusing... watching animals is SO much better than television! the chippie in the seed-box was adorable, if perhaps a little naughty. it's hard to be stern about chipmunks and squirrels; they're just too cute.

i spied some glass pumpkins... i have some of those, too. one of my favorite autumn decor things. and autumn IS coming, despite the horrid heat that still hangs about. it's getting better now that florence headed northward. i was so grateful that it bypassed us, as initially we were slated for a walloping from it. i'm very near the chesapeake bay, and contrary to all the initial predictions, it looped around us entirely. very odd, and very welcome. :)

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment!♥ This was a very hot summer for us up in New England--the warmest one in 118 years (or so I've heard). I am really grateful that the last couple of weeks have brought cooler temperatures. I love autumn; it might be my favorite season, although every season has it's own beloved magic. I only wish that autumn lasted longer. What are your seasons like in the Chesapeake Bay area? In Massachusetts winter is by far the longest season. Typically, the seasons are like this: winter is December through April; spring is May; summer is June through mid-September; and autumn is late September through November.
