Return to Royalston

Today the kids and I drove back to Royalston. I admit that I have become obsessed with the place. It was a crisp autumn day, perfect for a hike. This time we went to Doane's Falls, which filled us with  amazement--the power, the roar, the misty spray! It was glorious. The river cuts swift and turbulent through a steep rock gorge, and some of the views are dizzying.

The woods there are lovely and deep: white pine, beech, birch, and oak. I would have liked to walk in them for many miles, but we left too late in the day and couldn't stay long.

Afterward we drove into the village. I parked the car at the Congregational Church and we got out and walked on the green admiring the green shuttered white houses and the quiet. It felt like home. I wished that I could stay.

Tonight I have candles glowing in all the rooms. I've started knitting another pair of pom pom peds and I am enjoying reading, The Red Garden. Amy just took some cookies out of the oven, and Seth is getting ready to pop some corn. We're going to watch Frankenstein in a little while, the old 1931 movie starring Boris Karloff.
